Merabu Profile
Kampung Merabu is located on the banks of the Lesan River, a tributary of the Kelay River. Administratively, this village is in the Kelay District area, and can be reached by car for 4 hours from the district capital, Berau. This village is relatively small with a population of only 66 heads of families divided into 2 Neighborhood Units. There were 109 men and 86 women.
Most of the Merabu people are indigenous people of the Dayak Lebbo tribe who are still related to the Dayak Lebbo in Merapun, Mapulu and Mapulu-Tintang villages. A small number of migrants are from Banjar, Java, Bugis, Toraja, Dayak Wehea and Timor.
The administrative area of Merabu is very broad, divided into several forest areas. Part of it is a production forest area managed by HPH with a concession area of around 11,300 hectares. Half of it is the Merabu Protected Forest area which is dominated by karst areas. This 10,800 hectare protected forest was proposed by the residents of Kampung Merabu to become a Village Forest which is a small part of the Nyapa Mountains Protection Forest with a total area of 47,000 hectares.
